چکیده

We show how multimedia applications with real-time requirements can be supported in a distributed system. A UNIX system has been modiied to give soft real-time support. The modiications include deadline-based scheduling, preemption points and prioritized interrupt processing. In addition, a system call interface for real-time application programming has been designed. We justify the modiications by experiments with a simple distributed multimedia delivery system. The experiments are made on an ATM network, where resources are reserved by means of the ST-2 internetworking protocol.

On Kernel Support for Real-Time Multimedia Applications

Real-time operating system services are required to support multimedia systems that rely heavily of the workstation processor for control of the audio and video processors and movement of audio and video data. Such services are typically not available in existing workstation operating systems. This note comments on the requirements for such services and briefly describes the YARTOS kernel; an o...

A Router-Based Congestion Control Scheme For Real-Time Continuous Media*

Many distributed multimedia applications require real-time network communication services to be effective. Although architectural models for real-time communication on the Internet are evolving (e.g., [2]), none appear to consider the problem of realizing real-time performance on existing local-area networks. This is important as the “first” and “last mile” of a network connection — the portion...

Architecture of a Light-Weight Multimedia Adapter

This papers analyzes the particular requirements that multimedia communication imposes on the network adapter and on the I/O subsystem of a workstation. An adapter architecture is developed that is specially suited for multimedia communication. The key ideas are the separation of isochronous and asynchronous traffic and the execution of per-byte protocol operations on the adapter. The adapter d...

Support for real-time computing within general purpose operating systems-supporting co-resident operating systems

Distributed multimedia applications are typical of a new class of workstation applications that require realtime communication and computation services to be effective. Unfortunately, there remains a wide gap between the development of real-time computing technology in the research community and the deployment of real-time solutions in commercial systems. In this work we explore technology for ...
